From the Porch: Rough streak broken

May 12, 2012

Giants 5, D-backs 2 at Arizona (no, I don't know who she is)

Giants (16-17): 100 123 001  5 9 2
D-backs (15-19): 001 000 100  2 6 2

WP: Cain (2-2)
LP: Caill (2-4)
SV: Casilla (7)
HR: None

Cain: 6ip 3h 1er 8k 2bb 2.28era
Cahill: 5.2ip 6h 4er 2k 3bb 3.65era

In the NL West: Dodgers beat Colorado and San Diego beat Philadelphia; Giants still second, 6 games back.

Comments: Very nice to break a nine-game losing streak to Arizona with a marvelous performance by Matt Cain and, finally, some run support for him. Actually, he provided a good deal of it himself, going 2/3 with a two-RBI single in the sixth and a nifty had slide that broke up a potential double play in the fifth (the run came around to score).

Pitching: Monstah. Cain's only Achilles heel was a bit of a high pitch count. Eight strikeouts.

Defense: Two errors again, Brandon Crawford needs to pick it up; Joaquin Arias is really picking it at third, which he hadn't played until last week. Guess we'll be seeing more of Emmanuel Burriss at second, as Ryan Theriot went on the DL with a sore elbow. Giants called up pitcher Shane Loux from Fresno (by the way, the MASH unit that the Giants have become has decimated the Fresno Grizzlies, who got off to their best start in their 15-year history but now are just getting shelled daily.

Offense: Another weird lineup by Bochy with Brandon Belt hitting second. Melky had two RBIs, Angel Pagan was 3/3 with a walk; that's an OBP we can get behind.

Next game: Giants at D-backs, 1:10 p.m. PDT at Chase Field. Zito (1-1, 2.21) vs. Saunders (2-2, 2.50). TV: CSN-BA
