From the Porch by Paterfamilias - May 02, 2012

Didn't see the Giants game last night because we were checking out the AAA affiliate Fresno Grizzlies. Now that team is putting up some runs, beat Salt Lake City Bees (Angels) 9-7 for a nice comeback win after giving up four runs in the first inning. Nobody very Major League-y was on the field; Ryan Langerhans played for Salt Lake and Eli Whiteside caught for the Grizz (boy, does he have a rough path back to the majors with two amazing young catchers in front of him -- Buster Posey and Hector Sanchez. Grizzlies may have a small attendance problem; really beautiful little downtown stadium that seats about 12,500, the place is really fun and they have decent promotions, but paid attendance last night was 3,300 and we did a head count and came up with about 280 people there who were outside. A few more perhaps in boxes or in the bar or underneath stadium.

Pretty typical Giants game, especially against pitchers who are dealing, like Ricky Nolasco is. Miami won 2-1 with Giants only run off a Panda homer. Matt Cain was his usual unbelievable self, going 8 innings, giving up 6 hits and somehow losing. This makes him career 70-75 with an ERA of 3.33. He has a 2.35 ERA this year but is 1-2. That ain't easy, but the Giants can't seem to score when he pitches.

Injury news -- Jeremy Affeldt on 15-day DL again for something weird.  Last year he ended his season after cutting himself while trying to separate frozen hamburger patties. This time it was arriving home and having his 4-year-old son jump on him and spraining his knee. Travis Blackley got the call-up from Frez.

Tonight: Two pitching reclamation projects face off, Carlos Zambrano vs. Barry Zito, 7 p.m. PDT on CSN Bay Area. Go Giants.
